Hosting & Domain Name

A basic summary of what hosting and domain names and what we will need to get your website live.

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the address of your website that people type in the browser URL bar to visit your website, for example chriate.com.au

Using domain names means we don’t have to have to remember IP addresses (a long string of numbers and characters). When you type in a domain name into your web browser, it sends a request to a server for the IP address of the website you’re trying to view, which then allows your browser to load it. This “translation” will be setup using the Domain Name System (DNS) which will either be where your domain was purchased or could be externally managed (somewhere like Cloudflare) by changing the Name Servers.

  • The domain name needs to point to the hosting (via an A Record/IP Address)

What is Hosting?

A website is made up of files like HTML pages, images etc. The website hosting is space on a web server to store these files. Different servers use different technologies and there are additional services/capabilities that can be offered.

When building the website with us we offer premium cloud hosting. If you have already purchased your own, then we will need access. Depending on the type of website we have built for you we will usually request cPanel access so we can upload the necessary files as well as manage other server details needed to setup the website.

  • The website files need to be setup on the hosting (via cPanel or similar)

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that authenticates a website’s identity and enables an encrypted connection. This can be purchased and setup through the hosting or domain provider. If hosting with us we can set this up.

Going Live

To get your website live you will need a domain name, hosting and an SSL Certificate. The DNS of your domain name will need to be setup to point to your hosting where you have setup your website files. We can either do this for you if we have access or we can assist you providing the necessary details.

Summary:

  • The domain name and the website hosting are 2 seperate things (although can be purchased together)
  • The domain name needs to point to the hosting (via an A Record/IP Address)
  • The website files need to be setup on the hosting (via cPanel or similar)
